General Info:
Southern High Rollers 4x4 Club (SHR) is a not-for-profit Texas club of 4-wheel drive owners. SHR was started in 1993 by a group of friends that enjoyed driving, working on, and talking about their rigs. One thing led to another and here we are 16 years later growing stronger and having more fun than ever. Our membership is very diverse and includes people from all walks of life such as police officers, accountants, airline pilots, truck drivers, programmers etc. This same diversity is reflected in the rigs our club members drive. We have and welcome every stage of vehicle from stock to fully modified rock crawling rigs.
Club Goals:
- Providing social, educational and recreational activities for its members.
- Participating in and supporting civic activities for the betterment of the community.
- Creating a family-oriented environment where we can gather for the purpose of exploring, preserving and enjoying the remote areas of Texas and surrounding states.
- Rendering aid and assistance as needed.
- Promoting the exchange of ideas and technical information.
- To adhere to the principles and practices of the United Four Wheel Drive Association (UFWDA), TreadLightly! and The BlueRibbon Coalition.
SHR meets once a month usually on the third Saturday of the month. We try to schedule at least one run each month. See our calendar for the current event and meeting schedule. We formerly published 4x4 Low Down, which was an on-line newsletter, and keep copies available on our site. We host two e-mail lists (one general discussion and one environmental) and a discussion forum for our members.
By joining our club and the general mailing list you can participate in e-mail-based discussions about our club, our 4x4's, and off-highway driving in general. By joining the club and the environmental list you will be sent occasional e-mails from The BlueRibbon Coalition, UFWDA and various other sources that talk about off-highway issues. Almost everyone out there has an opinion about off-road use and what is right or wrong with the sport of 4-wheeling.
Membership:
Membership is open to anyone over the age of 18 that holds a valid driver's license and owns a 4x4 vehicle.
- Individual Membership is for single individuals or those whose families do not participate with them. The cost is $40 annually. Individual members get 1 vote.
- Family Membership is for those whose families (all members living under one roof) will participate with them. The cost is $45 annually. Family membership gets a maximum of 2 votes.
- Associate Membership is open to people who reside 75 miles outside of Houston’s Beltway 8 and who choose not to be either an individual member or family member. This option allows those that live too far from Houston to attend meetings or other club functions on a regular basis to still participate in club outings. The cost is $22 annually. Associate Members are not eligible to vote or run for office.
You may apply for membership by submitting a Membership Application (you may download the free Adobe Acrobat reader at: Adobe Reader) via mail to the address on the application or by contacting our for an application by mail.
Advertisers and businesses that support SHR are posted in the "Links" section of our website.
By-laws:
SHR has adopted a simple set of by-laws which govern our activities as a club. (You may download the free Adobe Acrobat reader at: Adobe Reader.) While we do not engage in a lot of parliamentary procedure, we do require that all members agree to these by-laws upon joining SHR. We have elected officers who provide leadership and direct day-to-day operations, and we are always on the lookout for members who can help with coordination of activities or work on projects.
Meetings:
Meetings are generally held on the third Saturday of each month. This may vary if there is a significant event occurring that weekend or for holidays etc. The meetings are usually potluck-type events held at a member’s house or local business. SHR attempts to have meetings on opposite ends of town in order to accommodate all members. Occasionally, we will combine a meeting with an event, have the meeting in a restaurant or have a party.
Committees:
Currently we have three committees that have been appointed: Events Committee, Charity Committee and a By-laws Review Committee.
